The Political Huipil Workshop

A huipil is a traditional indigenous garment worn typically by women in southern Mexico. The huipil was originally imposed by Colonialism. However, it is now a symbol of cultural pride. The workshop consisted of making designs on miniature plexi-glass cut huipiles whilst conversing about the political climate of the Trump administration at the time, and sharing stories of immigration. At the end, participants took home a huipil pin designed by them and a sense of relief after sharing concerns and fears in a safe place.

Each of these poems were written in response to my experiences with visiting and writing to asylum-seekers held in detention centers or being interrogated for their credible fear interviews with Customs and Border Protection Agents
